Designs & Options to increase Back Yard Appeal

MATERIALS
Breslin Decks and other options can be built with cedar (pic #1-10), TREX
(pic #11-18)
or a mix of both (pic #19). TREX is the best material for areas
that wear faster, and colors include saddle (pic #11-15) and madeira (pic
#16-17)
.

PATTERNS
Deck patterns can be parrallel (pic #9), herringbone (pic #18), diagonal
(pic #10)
or a combination.

SIZES
No two custom decks are exactly alike, simply because no two houses have
the same design, nor do the properties they are built on have the same type
of plot plans. However, there are several configurations that have been
proven to work, both functionally and aesthetically. Breslin Decks & Awnings
can help you chose the proper sized deck.

SHAPED TO FIT
A great design option for your deck is to wrap it around a structure, like the
corner of your house (pic #17) or a tree (pic #2).The design of your deck
can also mimic the shape of an exterior wall (pic #15) or spa (pic #10).

DECK HEIGHT
Breslin can create a custom deck at a variety of heights, depending on your
needs. A ground or low level deck (pic #1-3) does not need rails. A deck a
few feet off the ground can have lattice added (pic #17) below for aesthetic purposes.

RAILS
A rail system is required by code if the finished deck is 30" or more above
ground level at any point. The rail system must be according to code (pic #6),
i.e: 36" high with balusters (spindles) no more than 4" apart.

PRIVACY FENCES
Privacy fences (pic #7) are useful in areas where neighbors are living in close quarters to each other, such as town homes, condominiums or where home-
owners associations require a six-foot barrier between properties.

GATES
Gates (pic #25) are recommended on high decks and/or if children will be
using the deck as a play area. Required by code if a deck is used as access
to a swimming pool.

PLANT HANGERS
Plant hangers (pic #5) can be made ‘open’ or ‘closed’ (with lattice), and various
heights and widths can be used to add to the appearance of the deck.

BENCHES
Benches (pic #24) can be built in any length i.e: 6', 8' 10'. Standard width
is 18"; height 16-17".

TRELLIS/PERGOLA
A trellis or pergola is added above the deck (or patio) when it is desired to
‘filter’ the sunlight without blocking it completely. Can also be designed to cover
all or part of the deck.

PAVERS
EP HENRY PAVERS Breslin Decks & Awnings can install EP Henry pavers in
and around our custom decks (pic#11). They can be used, for example, at the bottom of steps, or as a walkway leading up to the deck. The pavers are more
attractive to walk on than just dirt or grass.
