Decks and Patio Designs For Outdoor Living At Its Best
Which Is Best For You?
As a homeowner, finishing your outdoor living area can be as daunting as decorating and designing your bedroom, living room, dining room and kitchen. Very often, outdoor living spaces are neglected and you may not know where to begin. No worries, but it’s important to recognize how often you’ll be able to enjoy the great outdoors and how the space will be used. Being smart early on in the planning stages will help you complete this valuable living space and stay within your personal design budget.
At first, it may be confusing to select the right option. With so much to choose from, how do you know whether to build a deck, a patio, include a spa, an outdoor kitchen and even a swing set for the kids? Just remember this important fact: This is a permanent space (at least one you won't be tearing out any time soon) so be sure to make the right decisions early on to have an outdoor space for many years of enjoyment.
Let’s cut the confusion and clear the clutter to determine what may be the most functional and more importantly the most beautiful outdoor living space for you and your home.
There are many options of decking materials to choose from. These include wood decks, composite decks, decks made from bamboo and more. So, where to begin? There are many people that enjoy the accomplishment of a DIY project. You may be wanting to complete this project on your own as well. But stop before you drop that credit card down at a home improvement store. You may soon discover you've bitten off more than you can chew. Several things can go wrong including inaccurate measurements, not enough materials purchased and simply not having the right tools. These pitfalls and shortcomings can cost you more than the initial plan of the project so it may be prudent to hire a professional deck builder/contractor right from the start. Maybe your home is new construction and you decided to wait before putting a deck off your kitchen. How level is the ground? Do you have a walk out basement and the need for steps between floors? Not only will a contractor have the right knowledge of materials, but he will also know how to design the deck of your dreams, utilizing the space available and stay within your budget.
Not all homes are best suited for a deck of any nature and what seem to be trending right now are patios. Materials like pavers, concrete, brick and stone just a few options. Patios are usually level with the ground whereas as a deck is generally built out from a location that may include a second floor, third floor or even a roof. As diverse as patios are for any home, it’s very important to think about how your patio will be used during the seasons. Do you entertain often? You may want to consider building a wall around the perimeter about 18” high for added seating. Matching the style of your patio design to the look and feel of your home should also be considered. Do you have a brick wall outside your back yard? Consider building a brick patio as a special compliment to the look, feel and overall design. If you have a contemporary home, concrete slabs or flagstone pieces formed into a design might mesh better and be the right option. If you love cooking, consider building a patio surrounding a newly built outdoor kitchen and grille. If you have a spa or pool you want your design to flow and function effortlessly, not to mention to be absolutely up to code and very safe!

This is an option but careful consideration must be made before making the investment. Think about how the room will be used. Granted they are gorgeous and often bring the outdoors in, but they also require a bit of maintenance and foresight. Do you have southern exposure? You may require air conditioning in the summer. If there is lots of shade out back and you intend to use this room all year long, heating elements may also be needed to manage the cold winter months.
Before choosing any of these options it’s important to do your research and speak with a design contractor.
